You've just landed at DXB, UAE after a long flight. You're tired, you have luggage, and you need to get to your hotel. Here is every option - with real costs, real journey times, and an honest recommendation for each type of traveller.

In this article

Dubai Airport - understanding the terminals first

Before anything else, know which terminal you're arriving at. Dubai International Airport (DXB) has three terminals and they are not all in the same place. Getting this wrong adds time and confusion to an already tiring arrival.

  • Terminal 1 — International airlines including Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, and most European and Asian carriers. Metro: Airport Terminal 1 station (Red Line).
  • Terminal 2 — Flydubai and some charter airlines. This terminal is not directly connected to the metro — you need a short taxi or shuttle ride to reach the nearest metro station.
  • Terminal 3 — Emirates exclusively. The largest terminal and where most international tourists arrive. Metro: Airport Terminal 3 station (Red Line). This is the best-connected terminal.

A free airport shuttle runs between T1, T2, and T3 if you need to transfer between them. The journey takes around 10–15 minutes. If you're arriving at T2 without a specific plan for onward transport, this matters more than it does at T1 or T3.

⚠️ Don't confuse DXB with DWC

Dubai has two airports. DXB (Dubai International) is where most tourists arrive and is well-connected to the city. DWC (Al Maktoum International, also called Dubai World Central) is 45 minutes from the city centre and significantly more expensive and inconvenient to get from. If you're arriving at DWC, skip to the DWC section at the bottom of this article — the options are completely different.

Option 1 — Dubai Metro (Red Line)

🚇Dubai Metro — Red Line

Cheapest option · Clean and air-conditioned · Runs from 5am to midnight (2am on weekends)

Best for solo travellers

Cost

AED 8–14

Single journey with NOL card

Time to Downtown

~35 min

T3 to Burj Khalifa station

Time to Marina

~55 min

T3 to DMCC station

The Dubai Metro is genuinely one of the best metro systems in the world — modern, clean, always on time, and fully air-conditioned, which matters enormously in Dubai's heat. The Red Line connects Dubai Airport directly to Downtown Dubai, Dubai Mall, Business Bay, Dubai Marina, and most areas tourists stay in. For a solo traveller with manageable luggage, it's simply the best option.
Cheapest option by far — AED 8–14 versus AED 60–100 for taxiNot practical with large suitcases — limited luggage space
No traffic delays — metro always arrives on timeT2 is not directly connected — needs a shuttle first
No language barrier, no negotiationDoesn't reach some hotels — may need a short taxi at the end
Station is inside T1 and T3 — no outdoor walk neededNo metro if arriving after midnight (except weekends)
Runs until midnight (2am Friday and Saturday)Crowded at peak commute times (8–9am, 6–8pm)
💡 Pro tip: Buy a NOL card from the machines inside the terminal before you board — it costs AED 25 (including AED 19 credit) and works on metro, buses, and trams. Single journey tickets are more expensive per trip and not reusable. The card pays for itself within two journeys.

The metro is particularly good for tourists staying in Downtown Dubai (exit: Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall station), DIFC, Business Bay, Sheikh Zayed Road hotels, Dubai Marina, and JBR. If your hotel is in Deira, you can also take the metro to Union Station and it's a short taxi from there.

Option 2 — Official RTA Taxi

🚕Official RTA Taxi

Metered · Available 24/7 · No booking required · Cream coloured with taxi roof sign

Reliable and safe

Typical cost

AED 60–90

Airport to most hotels

Airport surcharge

AED 20–25

Added automatically at DXB

Availability

24/7

Always a queue at arrivals

Dubai's official RTA taxis are cream-coloured, metered, and one of the safest and most regulated taxi systems in the world. You cannot negotiate the fare — it runs on a meter, which is both a protection and a slight inconvenience if traffic is bad. There is an AED 20–25 airport departure surcharge added automatically to every fare from DXB, which is normal and legal. The queue for taxis at arrivals is usually 5–15 minutes.
Available 24/7 — works for late night arrivals when metro is closedAED 20–25 airport surcharge on top of meter
Metered — no negotiation, legally regulatedMeter runs in traffic — can be significantly more in peak hours
✓ Plenty of boot space for large luggageQueue at busy times — can be 15–30 minutes
No data or app needed — just queue at the rankNo metro if arriving after midnight (except weekends)
Accepts both cash and cardNo way to track the driver or see the route in advance
💡 Important: Only use the cream-coloured official RTA taxis from the designated taxi ranks inside the terminal. Never accept a ride from someone approaching you inside the arrivals hall offering a taxi — these are unlicensed and the #1 airport scam in Dubai.

Option 3 — Uber and Careem

📱Uber / Careem

App-based · Fixed price upfront · Track your driver · Available at all terminals

Best for most tourists

Typical cost

AED 55–95

Airport to most hotels

Wait time

3–8 min

Usually faster than taxi queue

Price type

Fixed

Shown before you confirm

Uber and Careem (the regional equivalent, now owned by Uber) both operate fully at Dubai Airport. The key advantage over a regular taxi is that you see the exact price before you confirm — no meter anxiety in traffic, no airport surcharge surprises. You also track the driver in real time and pay through the app, which means no fumbling for cash after a long flight. For most tourists travelling in a pair or small group with luggage, this is the sweet spot between convenience and cost.
Fixed price shown upfront — no surprises Requires data — need UAE SIM or roaming before you land
Track your driver — know exactly when they arrivePick-up point can be confusing — designated Uber areas are separate from taxi ranks
Pay in-app — no cash neededSurge pricing during busy periods (holidays, New Year's Eve)
Often slightly cheaper than taxi due to no surcharge surprisesAccount needs to be set up before travel
Works at all terminals
💡 Pro tip: Buy a UAE SIM card as soon as you clear customs — du and Etisalat both have kiosks in the arrivals hall. A 7-day data SIM costs around AED 50–75. This solves the Uber problem and also means you have maps and WhatsApp from the moment you arrive, which makes the whole trip easier.

Real tourist experience"We arrived at midnight with two large suitcases and a toddler. I was worried about getting a taxi at that hour. Opened Uber before we even got through immigration, the car was waiting when we came out of customs. AED 78 to our hotel in JBR, price was fixed before we got in. The easiest airport arrival I've ever had in any country."

Option 4 — Pre-booked private transfer

🚘Pre-booked Private Transfer

Driver waiting with name sign · Meet and greet · Fixed price · Upmarket vehicles

Best for business / luxury

Economy car

AED 120–180

Airport to any Dubai hotel

Business class

AED 200–350

Mercedes E-Class or similar

Wait included

60 min

Driver waits if flight is late

A pre-booked transfer means a driver waiting for you in the arrivals hall with your name on a sign. No queuing, no app needed, no luggage hauling to find your car. The driver monitors your flight and is there when you land, even if your flight is delayed. For business travellers, families with young children, or anyone who values a stress-free arrival, this is worth the premium. Book through a TripReview-verified company — unverified operators have a pattern of not showing up.
Driver waiting with name sign — no searching 2–3× the cost of Uber for similar journey
Flight monitoring — driver adjusts for delaysMust book in advance — not available on the spot
Premium vehicles, plenty of spaceUnverified companies have a no-show pattern — check TripReview first
Fixed price confirmed before travel
No app or cash needed on arrival
💡 Warning: Gulf Transfers Co is on the TripReview Scam Watchlist for no-show transfers — tourists paid in advance and no driver appeared. Always book with a verified company and get the driver's name and contact number before you travel. Emirates Executive Cars (TripReview Score 76) is a reliable option for private transfers.

Option 5 — Hotel shuttle

🚌Hotel Shuttle Bus

Offered by some hotels · Usually free or low cost · Fixed schedule

Only if your hotel offers it

Cost

Free–AED 50

Depends on hotel

Wait time

20–60 min

Fixed schedule departure

Availability

Limited

Not all hotels offer this

Some Dubai hotels — particularly those in Dubai Marina and the beach areas — offer airport shuttles, either free or at a nominal charge. If your hotel offers this, it is usually worth taking for the simplicity. The downside is that shuttles run on fixed schedules, so you may wait up to an hour depending on when your flight lands. Call the hotel before you travel to confirm the shuttle schedule and where to meet it in arrivals.
💡 Always confirm the shuttle exists and get the schedule in writing before you travel. Some hotels list a "shuttle service" on their website but it requires 24-hour advance booking and only runs twice a day. Don't assume — call and confirm.

Airport transport scams — what to watch for

Dubai Airport has far fewer scams than most international airports, but they do exist and they target tired, disoriented tourists who just want to get to their hotel quickly. Knowing what to look for takes 30 seconds and can save you AED 200–500.

❌  The most common airport scams in Dubai

  • Unofficial "taxi" touts inside arrivals hall — Men approaching you before you reach the taxi rank, offering a ride. These are unlicensed and charge 3–5× the legitimate rate. Never accept. Always walk to the official taxi rank or wait for your Uber outside the designated pick-up area.
  • Pre-paid transfer that doesn't show up — You book a transfer online through an unverified website, pay in advance, and no driver appears. Gulf Transfers Co is currently on TripReview's Scam Watchlist for exactly this. Only book verified transfers.
  • Fake metro card sellers — Rare but reported — people offering to sell you a pre-loaded NOL card outside the metro for "convenience." Buy your NOL card directly from the yellow machines inside the terminal. They're simple to use and take cards and cash.
  • Unofficial currency exchange at arrivals — People offering cash exchange before you reach the official exchange counters, with unfavourable rates. Use the official exchange counters or an ATM.

✓  The simple rule that protects you from all of it

Walk past anyone who approaches you in the arrivals hall. Every legitimate transport option in Dubai — taxi, metro, Uber, hotel shuttle — is reached by walking to a designated area. Nobody legitimate solicits customers inside the terminal. If someone approaches you, smile, say no thank you, and keep walking.

Al Maktoum Airport (DWC) — completely different situation

A small but growing number of flights — particularly flydubai and some charter flights — arrive at Al Maktoum International Airport, also known as Dubai World Central or DWC. If this is you, the situation is significantly different from DXB.

DWC is located 45–60 minutes from central Dubai, in the direction of Abu Dhabi. There is currently no metro connection. Your options are more limited and more expensive.

⚠️ DWC transport options

  • Official taxi — The most reliable option. Expect AED 150–200 to Downtown Dubai, AED 180–240 to Dubai Marina. Metered with an airport surcharge.
  • Uber / Careem — Available at DWC but surge pricing is common due to limited driver availability in this area. Expect similar or slightly higher prices than taxi.
  • Pre-booked private transfer — The best option if you know you're arriving at DWC. Book in advance and confirm the driver has the correct airport.
  • RTA public bus — Bus route 103 connects DWC to Ibn Battuta Mall, from where you can take the metro. Takes about 90 minutes total. Cost around AED 10. Only practical if you have time and minimal luggage.

One important thing to note: always check your flight booking carefully to confirm which airport you're arriving at. "Dubai" on a booking can mean either DXB or DWC, and if you assume DXB and it's DWC, you will have a long, expensive taxi journey ahead of you.

Step-by-step guide — from landing to hotel

  • Clear immigration and collect your bags

Dubai immigration is generally fast — 15–30 minutes for most nationalities. Baggage at DXB T3 usually arrives within 20–30 minutes. Use the time in the immigration queue to open Uber or Careem and confirm your account is working.

  • Buy a UAE SIM card (highly recommended)

Du and Etisalat kiosks are in the arrivals hall, before you exit customs. A 7-day tourist SIM with data costs AED 50–75. This gives you Uber, Google Maps, WhatsApp, and everything else from the moment you land. If you have roaming, skip this but data costs can be high.

  • Choose your transport option

Refer to the guide above. For most people: Uber if you have a phone, official taxi if you don't. Metro if you're travelling light and staying near the line. Private transfer if you pre-booked it.

  • Walk past anyone who approaches you

No explanation needed. Walk to the official rank, the Uber pick-up zone, or the metro. Every legitimate option is signposted. Follow the signs.

  • Metro: buy your NOL card first

If you're taking the metro, go to the yellow ticket machines inside the terminal before descending to the platform. Buy a NOL card (AED 25 including credit), not a single journey ticket. Tap in and out at each journey — it calculates the fare automatically.

  • Taxi or Uber: confirm your hotel address before you get in

Have your hotel name and address in both English and Arabic if possible — your hotel's booking confirmation usually has both. In Uber it's pre-entered. In a taxi, show the driver on your phone or give the address verbally. Most Dubai taxi drivers speak basic English and are familiar with all major hotels.

🛡️ Book your airport transfer with a verified company

If you're pre-booking a private transfer from Dubai Airport, use a TripReview-verified company. Emirates Executive Cars (Score 76) and DXB Rentals (Score 88) both offer airport transfer services with confirmed UAE operating licences, verified reviews, and transparent pricing. Check the TripReview Scam Watchlist before booking with any company you haven't heard of.

Airport transport questions tourists ask most

Is the Dubai Airport metro safe to use alone at night?

Yes, completely. The Dubai Metro is one of the safest public transport systems in the world, monitored by CCTV throughout and staffed at every station. There are dedicated women and children carriages at the front of every train. It runs until midnight on weekdays and 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. If your flight lands after midnight on a weekday, the metro won't be running and you'll need a taxi or Uber.

How long does it take to get through Dubai Airport immigration?

For most nationalities, 15–30 minutes during normal hours. Dubai uses smart gates (automated e-gates) for many passport types which are significantly faster than manned counters. GCC nationals and many European, American, Australian, and Asian passport holders can use these. Peak times (when multiple long-haul flights arrive simultaneously, usually between 11pm and 3am) can stretch to 45–60 minutes at manned counters. Terminal 3 (Emirates) has the most e-gates and is typically fastest for eligible passport holders.

Can I use Uber in Dubai or is it banned?

Uber is fully legal and widely used in Dubai. Careem (the regional equivalent, now owned by Uber) also operates. Both apps work exactly as they do at home — request a ride, track the driver, pay in-app. Dubai has a specific designated pick-up area at the airport for app-based rides, separate from the official taxi rank. Follow signs for "Smart Ride" or check the app for the pick-up pin location once you've confirmed your ride.

Is there a bus from Dubai Airport to the city?

Yes, RTA public buses operate from DXB, but for most tourists arriving with luggage after a long flight, they are not practical. Routes serve Deira, Bur Dubai, and other areas but journeys are slow and require standing with luggage. The fare is around AED 5–10. If you are extremely budget-conscious and travelling light with time to spare, Bus Route C1 (from T1 and T3 to Union Square) is an option. For everyone else, the metro or Uber is far more practical.

What currency should I use for the taxi from Dubai Airport?

Official RTA taxis accept both cash (AED) and cards. If paying by card, tell the driver before the journey starts as some older meters have slower card processing. If you want to pay cash, there are ATMs immediately after customs in the arrivals hall — withdraw AED before you exit. The airport currency exchange counters are convenient but offer slightly worse rates than city ATMs. For Uber, payment is handled entirely in-app — no cash needed at all.
